Remember that a divorce doesn’t have to happen tomorrow. You can start the process and this thing could last six months, nine months, a year, a year and a half. And while you probably don’t want it to drag out that long, recognize that this gives you some time to build new facts.
And so, if you think that you’re capable of having a 50/50 time sharing and handling all the responsibilities, be aggressive and show the court that you can do that by actually doing it.
Don’t expect the court to go ahead and just give you the time and then all of a sudden you’re going to show it later. Start doing it now.
So, if you separate, let your wife know that you’re ready to go to this kid event, that kid event. You’re ready to take them 50% of the time. Hell, you’ll take ’em 60% of the time if she’ll let you.
And if you guys have a disagreement on that and she doesn’t want you to have the kids as much as you want, then keep asking. Every day if you need to. Be persistent; do it in writing.
But at the end of the day, you can make a difference by what you do today, regardless of what has historically happened. What’s in the past is in the past.
